CAUSE Schoolworkshop at the TUHH in Cooperation with the Mint
On April 15th, we hosted a student workshop at TUHH in cooperation with the Mint:Pink programme, which supports talented and interested female middle school students with excursions and workshops in math, computer science, natural sciences, and technology. The day began with a round of introductions. We introduced the basics of programming using the B.O.B 3 microcontroller environment. B.O.B. 3 are beginner friendly microcontrollers with a set of LEDs and sensors which can be programmed in C++. They offer a structured and encouraging tutorial which guides new programmers through the process, which all students quickly took to. We were impressed with the level of enthusiasm and the cool results they achieved within such a short time. We added to the lunch break a quick tour over the campus and introduce the prominent locations and answered questions about life as a university students, as well as options for studies and extracurricular activities. After the lunch break, the second half featured an interactive lecture session about computer science as a field of research and the foundations of machine learning. The students got to play with and experience reinforcement learning using MENACE, an analogue Tic-Tac-Toe bot that improves itself using beads and an intuitive reward mechanic. We explained the most important concepts of machine learning with this example and how theoretical research make modern computer science possible. Active participation and questions by the students helped make this workshop a smooth and fruitful experience. After the workshop, we recapped the day and collected feedback. We are looking forward to more cooperation with the Mint:Pink programme and to expand our workshop
